CIFF2023: The Queen + Q&A 12

The Chiswick connection: Producer Andy Harries lives in Chiswick, as did actress Sylvia Sims, with many scenes shot in the nearby Ealing Studios.

Won one Academy Award for Best Actress. Nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Directing.

After the death of Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth II struggles with her reaction to a sequence of events nobody could have predicted.

This 2006 biographical drama film directed by Stephen Frears offers an intimate portrayal of the British Royal Family’s response to the death of Princess Diana in 1997. As we approach the anniversary of the beloved monarch’s passing, we felt this would make a poignant introduction to the festival. We also celebrate the life and work of the late Sylvia Sims through this screening. Presenting a clash between tradition and modernity, the monarchy’s relevance in contemporary society, and the challenges faced by those in positions of power when confronted with public sentiment, this a skilful and thorough drama.

The Oscar nominated team behind the film will be in the cinema for a Q&A following the screening. Screening as part of the Chiswick in Film Festival 2023.
