Karel Reisz: Later Works

We follow on our exclusive celebration of the under appreciated British New Wave innovator Karel Reisz, with these special screenings of some of his later works.

We’ll revisit four films from the scorching suspense of Nick Nolte vehicle ‘WHO’LL STOP THE RAIN’; to the tense and haunting character drama ‘THE GAMBLER’, to Vanessa Redgrave’s acclaimed performance in ‘ISADORA’; to the extra-ordinary visual and written splendour of the Pinter-scripted ‘THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT’S WOMAN.’

Previously The Chiswick Cinema presented Q&A screenings with Melvyn Bragg, John Lahr, Susan Hampshire, Stephen Frears and Vanessa Redgrave in our 2023 retrospective of Reisz’s early films.

Programmed in association with the Reisz family.

About Karel Reisz

Karel Reisz was born in 1926 in Czechoslovakia and fled Nazi Germany on the kindertransport, coming to the UK where after his service in the war he found himself among peers like Lindsay Anderson and Tony Richardson.

With those and others, he helped to define the British New Wave, the DNA of which can still be felt in cinema to this day. In his later years, his time as a theatre director, revitalised works by Rattigan, Beckett, Pinter and many others.

His films were nominated for multiple awards including six times for BAFTAs and on three occasions for the Cannes Palme d’Or.
